Coronary Care Unit

  • The Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at PSG Hospitals aims to provide high quality assessment, investigation and treatment of adult patients with acute cardiovascular disorder
  • The staff of the Coronary Care Unit aim to maintain or improve the quality of life for our patients, working together with the wider multi disciplinary teams and keeping the patient the focus of all care planning and delivery
  • The Coronary Care Unit is situated on the second floor of the Hospital. It consists of eight bedded bay arranged around a central, nurses’ station. This allows for maximum observation and minimum noise for optimal patient comfort
  • Our clinical expertise and practice is based on a core of professional knowledge and skills supported by research. We continually update our skills and knowledge through a program of continuing training and development

Services Available

A range of services are available in the Coronary Care Unit, including:

  • Acute cardiac care for patients who have a wide range of cardiac disorders/diseases such as a heart attack, angina, heart failure, chest pain, cardiac rhythm disturbances and cardiac infections
  • Care for the sick patients who may require ventilatory support, invasive and non-invasive advanced life support such as emergency pacing (transvenous and trans-thoracic) and intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) support for a failing heart.
  • Patients currently requiring intervention such as an Angiogram/ angioplasty/ Permanent Pacemakers will be observed post procedure
  • Hemodynamic monitoring including blood gas analysis enables the management of patients on various therapeutic medications for heart attack and heart failure.
  • CCU protocols help to provide therapies as per guidelines and recommendations.
  • Infection control protocols, 1:1 critical care nursing, the 24×7 availability of a trained physician/cardiologist code blue team have helped in improving outcomes in our CCU, and ensures immediate access to our Cathlab.

Medical & Nursing Team

  • Six Consultant Cardiologists and their teams, all the Medical Consultants also care for patients on our Unit.
  • The Unit currently employs 16 whole time equivalent Registered Nurses headed by 4 nursing supervisors, two Health Care Assistants, Ward Clerk and dedicated cleaner.
  • The Cardiac Rehabilitation Team are responsible for patient education and rehabilitation following a heart attack
  • All the staff works closely with the Cardio-Respiratory Team who undertake all types of cardiac tests and investigations.
