Critical Care Medicine

The Department of Critical Care Medicine of PSG Hospitals has arguably the most spacious Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) in the region. Intensive care is the bedrock of the department which was established in 2009. This 21-bed intensive care unit is equipped with 22 advanced ventilators and state-of-the-art monitors. The department also has an exclusive in-house ECHO & ultrasound machine which scans the heart and gives a proper picture and vital information about its structure as well as its function.

Regular academic programmes involving experts from all over are utilised as a tool to brush up knowledge as well as to imbibe new information on various procedures and equipment. Dietary, physiotherapy and pharmacy services are provided round the clock, which is vital for any critical care department. Contact isolation rooms or single-patient rooms for patients with communicable diseases are available. The intensive care units are also equipped with temporary pace-making facilities and defibrillators (equipment that gives the heart an electric shock as a life saver). Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) technique are available for patients who need them. All intensive care units are managed by fully trained and experienced intensivists, or physicians who specialise in the care of critically ill patients.

With its well structured team work and dedicated personnel the department, now headed by Dr R.M.P.L. Ramanathan, has managed to clock a very good success rate in handling emergency situations. It has also adopted international guidelines and protocols regarding patient care. The department’s one and two year fellowships are recognised by Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine for Indian Diploma in Critical Care Medicine.
