The Department of Urology’s inpatient as well as outpatient treatment began as another super-speciality service of the PSG Hospitals in 1997. Dr R. Palaniswamy was its founding Head of the Department, who went on to guide the department’s evolution for a decade till 2006. A year after its inception itself, the department started performing renal transplant surgeries, or surgeries that are performed to replace a kidney with another one.

Till now, the department has successfully performed more than 250 kidney transplant surgeries to its credit with zero mortality, or without a single case of death being reported in such surgeries. The department’s unique selling proposition is the affordable cost offered for such surgeries.

In 2007, Dr G. Ponnuswami, who assumed charge as its Head of the Department, started utilising urodynamic tests for evaluating the functions of the bladder. Such tests provide information on normal as well as abnormal functions of the urinary tract, and are vital tools to reach a better understanding of the condition of patients with lower urinary tract symptoms. Now, about 15-20 such cases are done every month.
The department, now headed by Dr M. Anandan, boasts of a dedicated well equipped operation theatre that has at its disposal state-of-the art equipment including the C-ARM machine. Use of C-ARM enables a magnified image at a lower dosage of radiation (X-ray). The department has acquired ureteroscopes, or instruments for examining the inside of the urinary tracts.

These ureteroscopes complete the array of equipment which it possesses, helping it to perform all major procedures including removal of stones endoscopically. Future plans include establishment of a separate, fully-fledged operation theatre as well as another minor operation theatre in its outpatient department along with a separate ward of its own. It also aims to offer postgraduate courses.
