• Ms Shrishti Ramamurthy of 2011 batch won the highest award of the institute G V MEMORIAL GOLD MEDAL for the ‘Best Outgoing Graduate’ for the year 2016.

• The J S Gold Medal Award for the Best PG Thesis Presentation by the postgraduate students was held on 27th Jan 2015 to recognize research work done by PSG and its effective communication. Three shortlisted PGs presented and Dr. Jenit Osborn Final Year Postgraduate student of the, Department of Community Medicine won the award. Dr. K Bhuwaneswari, HOD & Professor of Pharmacology was the Organizing Secretary for this Program.

• Dr. W. Lydia Jeris 1st year post graduate, Department of Pathology, PSGIMSR, presented a poster titled ‘Right atrial thrombosis in a young girl – a case report’ in the South Zone CME & Workshop on Haematology & Transfusion Medicine funded by the Medical Council of India (MCI) held at PSG IMS&R on 15th & 16th May 2015 and won the FIRST PRIZE.

• Mr Anten P Jonish (MBBS Final Year) won the Dr T Gnanaseelan Memorial Gold Medal for his paper presentation on “Radio assessment of improvement after pyeloplasty in pelviureteric junction obstruction” held during the “CHEPSCON 2015” -14th Annual Conference of Indian Association of Paediatric Surgeons, Tamilnadu & Pondicherry chapter at Chennai between 12th to 14th June, 2015.

• Mr A K Prasanth (MBBS -2010 Batch) won the Best Oral Presentation Award in the International Undergraduate Medical Conference ‘NUMESCON 2015’, held at North Bengal Medical College, Siliguri for his Project entitled “Flupirtine Maleate in paclitaxel induced neuropathic pain model in rats”.

• MBBS students participated and secured the overall runners in the ‘South India Level Inter Medical Tournament’ organized by Kasturba Medical College, Manipal on April 19th to 25th, 2015.

• Dr M Soundarya, Postgraduate student, Department of General Surgery received a grant approval of Rs.50,000/- from “Research Society for the study of Diabetes in India”, to pursue her study on “Efficacy of autologous platelet rich fibirin (PRF) over moist sterile saline /povidone iodine dressing in diabetic patients with foot ulcers and the influence of TLR 4 receptors in their healing –a randomized controlled study”.

• From MBBS 2011 & 2012 Batch 15 students participated in AURA 2015-Cultural Fest (such as Variety Show,Quiz, Solo dance, Singing, Face painting etc.,) on 6th to 8th August,2015 Organized by Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences 2015 and secured “OVERALL WINNERS” with a cash award of Rs.50,000/- and gift vouchers worth Rs.10,000/- .

• Dr.Subhashini, 3rd year post graduate student of Community Medicine received a study grant to participate in the intensive course on “Research Methodology in Sexual and Reproductive Health” at Geneva conducted by the Geneva Foundation for Medical Education and Research (GFMER) and World Health Organization (WHO) during September 2015.

• Dr Thomas V Chacko Professor & Head Community Medicine and Medical Education was elected as the National President of the Academy of Health Professions Educators (AHPE) for the year 2017 in APHE Executive Committee meeting held on November 23, 2016 at Pramukhswami Medical College (PSMC), Karamsad, Gujarat, India.

• Dr. Thomas V. Chacko represented India at the “Summit on Accreditation of Medical School” during the fourth SEARAME conference at Yangon, Myanmar, 16th to 18th November 2016.

• Dr Prasanna N Kumar, Professor & Head, Pathology Visited Ethiopia as a key member of the Medical Advisory Board of The Aslan Project, Inc, a United States-based non-profit organization. The visit was to organize Haematopathology facilities at Jimma University medical school and to teach fellows in Pediatric Oncology and residents in Pathology.

• Dr. Thomas V. Chacko Visited Myanmar to conduct a workshop on “Academic Leadership” and was a Panel member of “Public Health Education” during the fourth SEARAME conference at Yangon, Myanmar, 16th to 18th November 2016.

• Dr RMPL Ramanathan, Professor & Director, Dept. of Pulmonary Medicine has completed Clinical Fellowship in Medical Lung Transplantation at Toronto General Hospital affiliation to University of Toronto.

• Dr. Y.S. Sivan, Associate Professor in Social Research, Department of Community Medicine, PSG IMS&R officiate as Consultant in the PSG-NIPCCD Monitoring and Supervision of ICDS Scheme in Tamil Nadu, under the MoU signed between NIPCCD (Ministry of Women & Child Development, Government of India) and PSG IMS&R.

During the 31st Graduation day, 155 Medical graduates and 66 Post Graduates (Super speciality, Masters and Diploma Degree) had received their course completion certificates.

Apart from this, 24 academic awards to the toppers of various subjects in the Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University examinations, and 19 gold medals were also presented to the students.

Mr. V M Annith Kumar, Mr.Vivek K Koushik & Ms. S Anusha(MBBS 2009 batch students) secured the FOURTH position in the State Level Collegiate Quiz Competition for under graduates on Neuro Sciences conducted by Neuro Foundation at Salem on 23rd June, 2012.

PSG STAFF DAY 2016:

PSG Staff day Celebrations were conducted between Jan.2017-Feb.19 of 2017. About 2500 staff members working for the various institutions under PSG Management participated in cultural and sports events. These programs were conducted as intra and inter institutional level. All the participants were appreciated by our Managing Trustee with a certificate and a memento on the PSG Staff Day Feb.20, 2017 celebrations at PSGIMSR.

Important activities

• Department of General & GI Surgery, PSG Hospitals organized PSG SURGICON 2014 focused on “An Update on Colo Rectal Surgery and Live Workshop” and more than 300 experts from across the Globe participated in this conference.

• A three day MCI – MET Basic Course Workshop on Teaching/ Learning/ Student Assessment for faculty was conducted by the Department of Medical Education from 31st March, 1st & 2nd April, 2015 for PSG IMSR faculty. In this program 30 faculty members participated. Dr. S. Shanthakumari, Professor of Pathology was the Organizing Secretary and Dr. V. Surekha, Professor of Geriatric Medicine from Christian Medical College, Vellore was the MCI Observer.

• A Workshop on Mentoring for first year faculty was conducted by the Department of Medical Education on 4th April 2015. The main objective of mentoring is to identify the “symptoms” early before the problem ends up with crisis – like withholding from exam, exam malpractice, suicide etc. The workshop provided a platform to share successful strategies in mentoring. Dr. S. Ramalingam, Dr. Thomas V Chacko, Dr. Pavai Arunachalam, Dr. S Shanthakumari, and Dr. PA Kumar were mentoring the group members & Dr. Pavai was the Organising Secretary for this workshop.

• A Workshop on Mentoring for Second year faculty was conducted by the Department of Medical Education PSG IMSR on 28th May 2015. to identify qualities of a good Mentor, and the areas that student need help the most, a good mentoring/coaching model that is suitable for our institution. Dr. Pavai was the Organising Secretary for this workshop.

• The Department of Medical Education, PSG IMSR organized the Ninth PSG-FAIMER Regional Insitute fellowship program in our institution from 13th to 22nd June, 2015. This Program is for the faculty of Medical Colleges in the South-Asia Region supported by FAIMER Foundation. FAIMER is a sister organization of Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) USA. The program had sessions on innovative Teaching – Learning methods, Change and Conflict Management etc. for first year fellows, to enable the participants to become effective teachers and proficient in general leadership and management skills to train other trainers in their home institutions. There were 64 participants who had attended this program from various institutions from all over India. The program now continues “On line” on the internet through a Mentor – Learner web (ML) via the PSG-FAIMER Listserve. Dr. Thomas V Chacko, Director of the FAIMER Regional Institute at PSG provided leadership to the program for its successful conduct with the help of other MET faculty from PSG IMSR.

DAFFRI (Director and Faculty of FAIMER Regional Institutes) meeting for Faculty & Directors of the four FAIMER Regional Institutes in India was hosted by PSG –FAIMER Regional Institutes on 17th June. The participants were lead faculty and core faculty for Project Management & Evaluation (PME) sessions from the four FRIs, in India who had participated in the FAIMER’s Capacity Building Initiative (CBI) which included On-line and On-site guidance & Practice of session facilitation skills. The purpose of DAFFRI was to provide a common platform for the Directors and Core Faculty for PME and PD all four FRI in India to come together with the purpose of sharing of Best Practices and explore areas for collaboration from across the four FRIs in India.

• CME program was conducted by the Department of General & GI Surgery on Mini Gastric Bypass Course with Live Workshop on April 10th & 11th 2015 .

• Workshop on Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) for FAIMER Fellows and faculty was held on 18th June 2015. The Learning outcomes for the participants were that they would be able to design a curriculum in CBME and teach CBME in MCI basic and advance courses as well as in other programs so that institutional faculty can implement CBME curriculum more effectively.

• Grant Writing Workshop for faculty was conducted by Research office on 6th June. 35 members participated in this worksop. Dr Sudha Ramalingam Associate Professor, Community Medicine was the Resource person / Organizer for this program.

SIDCER resurvey of the Institution Human Ethics Committee was carried out between July 29-31st 2015.

• A Training programme on Human Resources Development for CRRIs was conducted by the department of Medical Education on 25th July and 1st & 8th August 2015, to teach the fundamentals of HR effectiveness – both personal and interpersonal, to make the participants understand the importance of Human Relations, Effective Communication, Time Management, and Personal effectiveness. In this program 148 CRRIs participated. Dr. GM Muhammad, Associate Professor of Community Medicine was the Organizing Secretary.

• A follow-up Mentoring meeting was conducted by the department of Medical Education on 9th September 2015, conducted for second MBBS faculty to review the progress made in Mentor –Mentee mentoring process. There were 26 faculty who participated in this program. Dr. Pavai Arunachalam,Professor, Pediatric Surgery was the Organizing Secretary.

• Therapeutic update on “Congestive cardiac failure” for PG students of Pharmacology, General Medicine, Cardiology, and Pediatrics was conducted by the department of Pharmacology at Simulation lab seminar hall on July 1st 2015.

• Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology Conducted a hands on training program on “SUTURING TECHNIQUES & EPISIOTOMY” on 19.08.2015 at PSG Hospital Seminar Hall for postgraduates and interns in the department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. Around 50 students participated in this training program.

• Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology Conducted cervical cancer screening camps (9 camps) in rural areas in co-ordination with Grama Vidiyal – NGO.

• Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics Training Programme was conducted by the department of Community Medicine for the Post Graduate students from Medicine, Physiology, Pharmocology, Microbiology, Anatomy & Community Medicine from 1st to 14th August 2015 at PSG IMSR. Dr S.L. Ravishankar, Professor and Dr Anil C Mathew, Professor of Biostatistics were the Organizers.

• The Department of Pathology, PSGIMS&R conducted a workshop on 29th September ’15 in principles and techniques of Immunohistochemistry. The accent of the workshop was on hands-on training in the procedure of IHC, understanding the errors that could occur during the procedure and how to trouble shoot these errors. The training was given by faculty from the Department of Pathology and technical specialists from the company PathnSitu.

• Dr Thangavelu memorial research award presentation was organized by PSG Centre for Research and Bioethics on September 25th, 2015. There were 3 contestants for the final round of presentation.

• Department of General & GI Surgery conducted CME program on Staplers and Hernia on September 19th 2015. Around 50 students were participated in this program.

• A Workshop was conducted by the Department of General & GI Surgery on “Advance Laproscopic Surgery” on 23rd to 26th November 2015.

PSG Centre for Research and Bioethics organized CME Workshops for DNB Trainees was conducted monthly thrice on August & September. The Post graduate Diploma in Bioethics was launched in the month of July 2015. The first contact session and orientation were held from July 25-28, 2015 and the Second Contact Session for Bioethics candidates was held on Sep 25 -27, 2015.

• The Continuing Medical Education Programme activities were reviewed by the Tamilnadu Dr.MGR Medial University Chennai and approved PSGIMSR as A Center for Accreditation.

Future Programs

Psychiatry department will be conducting State Level CME as part of Indian Psychiatry Society, Tamilnadu branch, on 20th December 2009.
